While the military leaders marched with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, there were clear signs that the Generals were not changing their loyalty to opposition leader Juan Guaido, who attempted to spark a military rebellion and force the current president out of office – these games are turning dangerous and the risk is high. In January, Mr Guaido declared himself Venezuela’s interim leader and he go the quick support of over 50 countries including the US, the UK and most Latin American national. He made the point that the recent election that was won by Maduro was illegitimate and there needed to be political change in this country that is now experiencing a humanitarian crisis which some people near starvation and inflation over 1 million percent.

The average Venezuelan has lost 7 kilos or about 15 pounds – of course international agencies are airlifting food, water and medicine from the US and Europe. China and Russia have been strong supporters of the Maduro government but this engagement with the US has been politically driven. Russia has placed strategic bombers in Venezuela and China has supported with surveillance equipment and 5 billion dollars, more recently, of aid to support the government. Threats of civil war continue.
