In a private meeting with business leaders and free trade supporters, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told these executives that the trade war with China could end before the 2020 election. At a private lunch on Tuesday, according to a piece on CNBC attributed Brian Schwartz, with about 40 members of the business community present, Pompeo suggested that there could be a solution.
This meeting is said to have had thought leaders from the GOP and major US investment firms and corporations. After levying tariffs on a wide range of Chinese goods, the US President has been in a trade war with China that has no end in sight, China will not back down in this fight.
The meeting was sponsored by the “Committee to Unleash Prosperity” which is a group of free traders and free speech supporters. There is no clear view on what the US wants to achieve on the China trade talks but one thing is clear, the relationship with the West has changed for China. In our view, the US will work for a deal and Trump might come out looking stronger. China will see its relationship change not only with the US but with the EU, Japan and most of the world.
