Just days before a new deal with South Korea, the US dropped demands to pay five times more to host its military personnel after receiving assurances that Seoul would purchase more US weapons, according to the local press. South Korea indicated that it would step up its presence in the Strait of Hormuz, helping the US protect flows of oil to the region – note that oil from the Middle East flows to South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan – among other nations in the region. The increase now may be 10% to 20% above the current level of nearly $1 billion, according to the Chosun Ilbo, a major news organization in Korea. Last month, US negotiators walked out of a meeting on troop allocation after Seoul laughed at a fivefold increase – it was just too much. The US and South Korea have a very close and deep military alliance, of course the 1950 to 1953 Korean Conflict was the start. Trump is now arguing that $5 billion should be paid for hosting US troops. President Moon of South Korea and the opposition conservatives have come out against the demands.
