As the Hong Kong International Airport reopens and threats of more aggressive action taken towards protesters increase, US President Donald Trump has asked to meet Chinese President X, face-to-face. President Trump is now suggesting that he injects himself in the local politics in the city of Hong Kong, but is likely to be viewed by Xi and Beijing as an attack on the PPC and on the stability of the international financial hub. “I know President Xi of China very well,” Trump tweeted.
Also, in this piece attributed to Riya Bhattacharjuee posted on CNBC, the US President tweeted several comments that were confusing. Trump said that if China wants a trade deal, it should treat the people of Hong Kong “humanely” …… what does this mean exactly?
In our opinion it seems that Trump is not reaching out to the leadership in Beijing, but to the youth who are protesting in Hong Kong. He seems to be signaling to them, telling them that he is on their side. This trade war will now moving into uncharted territory and it will likely get much worse.
