The US Fourth of July fireworks are now considered a political issue as the US President has elevated the event to a parade, a flypast by military jets and of course a lot of fireworks to celebrate an important day in American history. Some of the public felt it was more like a campaign rally for Mr Trump, and of course upset as he used taxpayers funds to bring it to the public. This US Independence Day celebration has been carried out for many years, and Mr Trump seems to be influenced by other countries that have massive military celebrations. Russia has a show of force unlike others, and France has its Bastille Day celebration – Trump seems to be copying Bastille Day.
Our View: The idea of a country having marching bands, parties and showing off its military as a vote of confidence for the armed forces is something that we in the US can support for years to come as more than 100 countries around the world have done so in recent history. Of course some are events celebrating the victory of WWII, but others are supporting the pride of a nation. And the US has, especially relative to so many other countries that embrace liberal thought and government systems, a lot to be proud about. Still, Trump should make it more about the United States and less about himself.
