The Sri Lanka Attacks - Police Were Warned Weeks Before

The Sinhalese-dominated government of Sri Lanka has now said that a small group of traditional Islamists called the National Thowheeth Jam`ath was behind the deadly suicide bombs that rocked three Christian churches and three hotels that are on international circuit and of course filled with Western tourists. These Islamists groups sometimes target Westerners and of course their belief systems. Of course, these Islamists are strict followers followers of Sharia Law.

The strikes, which targeted foreign tourists and Christians were coordinated by a group of locals and according to the government international entities, that gave the local Islamists support. The recent attacks have shifted to disrupt tourism, a major cash business for the Sri Lankan economy. The President, and one Cabinet minister have made it clear that there needs to be more diligence in protecting all religions.

Cabinet Minister Herin Fernando stated that an internal police memo from April 11 warned that attacks on Catholics and other Christians were being plotted by bad actors. Foreign intelligence agencies warned the government of “religious extremists” planning attacks. However, the police were not able to stop this terrorist attack despite warnings, numerous warnings.

The Tamil and other groups of Islamist have carried out attacks on Easter in the past, in fact they often use Christian holidays to make a statement to minority groups. Muslims make up 10 percent of the Sri Lankan population while Christians make up only 7.2% of the total population.

The government has enacted a curfew from 20:00 or 8pm until early morning each night just to keep people off the streets, to avoid attacks of retribution.
