The Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha on Friday ordered an investigation into several small bombings in Bangkok that took place as Thailand was hosting a high-level meeting attended by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his counterparts from China and other countries in the region, according to a piece sourced from ABC News, attributed to Grant Peck and Kaweewit Kaewjinda, AP.
Police found some explosive devices that had not detonated while some had, a total of six were identified. These explosions included two of the Skytrain rail system stations and a government complex on the outskirts of the city. The government took power last month and is led by a former army commander Prayuth Chan-ocha, who staged a 2014 takeover but tried elections this time and succeeded. Thailand has had a history of coups and military juntas that have disrupted economic growth.
The use of small, generally harmless bombs, though infrequent, is a regular part of the Thai political scene, though rarely do the perpetrators claim responsibility or get arrested. There are stories of power struggles within the ruling parties that some of these explosions can be attributed to. Note that Thailand was one of the few countries on the planet that was not colonized. Of course the other in the region being Japan.
