Currently the 2019 World Aquatics Championships are taking place in Gwangju, South Korea and with only two days left on the schedule, the parties have started. However, one party that was taking place at a popular night club ended in tragedy when a balcony collapsed onto the dance floor, killing at least two people. The party was being held by USA Water Polo, according to several reports. The USA Water Polo governing body for the sport said that “all USA Water Polo athletes are safe and accounted for. Our thoughts are with all those involved.”
One woman from the team Kaleigh Gilchrist, of Newport Beach, California, was the most seriously injured when she suffered a deep leg laceration that required surgery. And Johnny Hooper, from the USA team was cut on this hand and he needed stitches. There is no reported information and details on those who were killed by falling debris. The US women won their third straight team championship by defeating Spain for the gold on Friday morning, US time. Christopher Ramsey, CEO of USA Water Polo spoke on behalf of the team giving their collective thoughts to those victims and their families.
