Russian leader Vladimir Putin is now saying he is committed to improving ties with the US post special counsel Robert Mueller`s probe showed a “demonstrated absence of any kind of traces, of any kind of collusion” between the Trump presidential campaign and Moscow. There is a feeling on both sides, that the relations between the US and Russia have been ignored and as a result there is a sense of detachment that benefits no one.
Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier pledged to seek better relations and to ease tensions. After meeting with Lavrov, Pompeo said the the US “fundamentally does not want war wth Iran.” Of course, Russia is a close ally of Iran and is concerned about US moves in the Middle East and the recent rhetoric that has come out of the White House. “We agreed on the importance of restoring channels of communications that had recently been frozen,” Lavrov said at their joint news conference.
Trump stunned the Russian side when he suddenly cancelled a meeting with Putin last year at the G20 Summit in Argentina.
Our view is that Russia and the US, despite the Mueller Report and congressional views on the White House, lines of communication should be left open as the US and Russia are rivals and they are sometimes in situations that could turn “hot” … lines of communication and cool heads are important for preventing conflict.
