North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump will meet on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam, an interesting place for their second ssummit. The choice of Vietnam is interesting as many geopolitical scientists are saying that this new model in Asia, the Vietnamese economic model is one that many would like Vietnam to learn from. There are still details that are not public – the exact cities for the conference have not been announced.
Vietnam is logistically convenient and symbolically significant according to those close the White House. Mr Kim can fly there quickly and there is no need for a layover or borrowing a plane from another nation. Also, it is worth noting that Vietnam has experience with international meetings and conferences so the choice does seem to be the right one. Trump will likely open up a new type of relationship with both Vietnam and North Korea – mainly because he is not part of Washington and has now historic ties to any parties or anyone that is close to Vietnamese history.
US Secretary of State, Mike Pampeo suggested on visits to North Korea and Vietnam last summer that the reclusive and sometimes distrusting state should model itself after Vietnam – but note that although it it is not a democracy, it does not have a strong man as well. so the ability of North Korean to become like Vietnam might be limited.
