The ongoing clashes between youth in Hong Kong and police have escalated with riot police entering Hong Kong International airport today to ensure that the facility would operate – the airport was closed yesterday. At one point, protesters detained two men and interrogated them, saying that they were police officers that had infiltrated the ranks of the protesters. One man was released but the other was bound and water was poured over him after a China ID card was found in his bag.
The man told the crowd that he was a journalist from China. He was eventually released and emergency services took him out of the airport terminal. According to the Independent, from which this piece was sourced, attributed to Zamira Rahim, the protesters are now using luggage carts to barricade themselves in as they keep police at a distance. Donald Trump has described the chaos at the airport as “very rough” and he hoped that no one got hurt. The embattled leader of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam said that the city was “on a path of no return.” Trump suggested that liberty was important for those involved.
