One issue that has bothered many of us in the US-China trade talks is this – President Xi of China and President Trump of the US are not having face-to-face talks. It is their trusted staff and trade experts who have been talking and with talks now at an impasse would it be good if these two leaders of the two largest economies in the world just worked out their issues? Mr Xi is a long-term thinker who understands trade and is sitting on a very powerful position.
He does not to upset those in his government, so he will work as a team leader who has the best interest for the Chinese people in mind. And those in the west must understand that as a culture, the Chinese are more patient than westerns, especially Americans. The US side is now saying that the G20 meeting will be longer than expected, as these two leaders have “deep” discussions scheduled, according to the White House.
Trump has slapped tariffs on $200 billion of goods and threatened to add tariffs to another $300 billion more. Although this meeting between these two leaders will likely not be a game changer right away, it might move President Trump into the direction of long-term thinking that would work well with President Xi in future discussions. Trump might learn something from Xi.
