Polio Re-emerges in the Philippines After 20 Year Absence

The Philippines has reported its first case of polio in nearly two decades, prompting the national health services to start a new immunization program. In a province called Lanao del Sur a three-year old girl was confirmed to have polio, the last time such a case was confirmed was the year 2000. Poliovirus can cause loss of usage of limbs and in some cases is a potentially fatal disease, has been arrested and cleared in many countries around the world but it is now becoming clear that many people who distrust the government.

Some people are not vaccinating their children and once defeated diseases are now coming back and sometimes in developing and first world countries. The government in Manila has started an oral liquid program for children 5 years old and under to ensure the next generation is protected. The program will start next month and millions of children will be administered medicine.
