In an effort to modernize the North Korean railways and roads with a view to eventually connect them with South Korean systems, ground was broke Wednesday. This project is being called a breakthrough but again, it seems to be directly connected to the nuclear negotiations. So until there is progress on weapons of mass destruction, there will be no further progress on the road and rail systems.
Despite progress on meetings – a train carrying 100 people from politicians to the elderly who were separated in the 1950 t0 1953 conflict – to make significant changes in the relationship and encourage investment between North and South Korea, progress must be made on nuclear weapons and the associated sanctions that the US has imposed on the North Korean regime. The key question now is the talks between the US and North Korea, which seem to have stalled since the historic meeting in Singapore in June or 2018.
This new project and the ceremony that was conducted on Wednesday, attracted North and South Korean politicians as well as representatives from China and Russia. Seoul received an exemption from the UN Security Council to proceed with this ceremony on Wednesday, as goods and vehicles were moved into the area. The Korean joint survey of North Korean railways in November was the first time that a South Korean train traveled on North Korean tracks.
The next step is nuclear negotiations…..
