The New York city police have had a string of suicides and the ninth one apparently took place yesterday. This was sourced from an article on ABC News. The Queens death marks the ninth suicide this year and with four dying in June and on in July. More police officers died by suicide this year than in the line of duty (27 as of August 1). Blue HELP, a nonprofit organization that tracks officer suicides, found that 122 officers killed themselves this year. Both police leadership and Mayor Bill de Blasio implored officers, there are more than 30,000 on the New York force, to see help if they are experiencing depression.
A recent white paper commissioned by the Ruderman Family Foundation, a philanthropic organization, found that police officers and firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. Our View: The pressure placed on police and first responders has been shockingly high. Currently the relationship in local inner city communities is at a low point. Better ties between the police and the communities must be established.
