Man Dies While Saving Girlfriend in River 1

While trying to save his girlfriend from a capsized kayak a 28-year-old man died in the Ohio River over the weekend, according to officials. Travis Hughes, of Pewee Valley, Kentucky, was kayaking with his girlfriend, 31-year-old Jamie Dunaway, and brother across the George Rogers Clark boat came in Clarksville, Indiana, around 9 p.m. Saturday when a wave hit Dunaway sending her into the water.

Hughes attempted to rescue her, but his kayak capsized and he did not return to the surface, a source at the location told ABC News. Dunaway swam to a local island and called rescue services and around 11:30 p.m. Hughes` body was found floating near a hydroelectric dam across from the boat ramp. No one in the group was wearing life jackets. Local officials cautioned vacationers to wear life jackets at all times near all types of water – rivers, lakes and even ponds.
