The notion of selling young women as brides is shocking, especially given that we are approaching 2020 and this type of crime actually takes place. More shocking is that a recent court case in Faisalabad which acquitted 31 Chinese nationals charged in connection with human trafficking. Some of the families and these women have even be threatened with retribution – hence it is difficult to arrest these horrible people. Some are said to be bribed into silence as the families are very poor.
Both the Pakistani foreign and interior ministries have been quiet as this issue has become an international outrage and even mentioned on news in some Middle Eastern and Muslim countries were selling women is more common. There are reports that in Iraq, the so-called “pleasure marriages” are conducted and are a front for selling children. In Niger, Iraq, Bangladesh and other countries in the region this practice is comment. Somalia, the birthplace of Ilhan Omar is ranked 10th in child marriage, and it would be great to see the US politician take up the fight to help young women in Somalia and the region. This issue should be addressed on a global scale – we all should be talking about it.
