Japan`s Birthrate Collapses

Trump Says the US and Japan Reach a Deal but Questions Remain 1

The demographic crisis in Japan is getting worse, and the population decline is accelerating with only 864,000 births in 2019 according to a report published by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. The rate of drop is shocking as 54,000 fewer births were recorded as compared to 2018. This comes on a year with 1.376 million deaths, pointing to a decline in population of 512,000, the highest ever.

The 864,000 births is the lowest since records have been kept, since 1899. Japan is a “super-aged” nation which means it has 20% of its population over 65, with Germany also having this same status. South Korea has also struggled with a falling population – fertility rates are now 0.98, down from 1.05. This is about one child per woman. The US and Singapore are moving to “super-aged” status in 2030.
