Japanese World Champion in Free Driving Falls Off Balcony, Dies in Parking Lot

Have you ever heard of Sayuri Kinoshita? She was only 30 years old and broke the Free Diving world record by successfully diving to a depth of 72 meters from her apartment balcony in Okinawa Prefecture last week. Okinawa is the southern-most island in Japan, about 3 1/2 hours south of Tokyo by plane. According to the Japan Times, police believe there is no foul play based on investigations at the scene but they still do not know how she fell. Despite falling several floors, Ms Kinoshita survived the fall, holding on to life, some saying she was physically stronger than most people as most would have died on impact. But she was clearly stronger than most people. She broke the world recored with no fins, in April 2016 in an intentional competition held in Dahab, Egypt, one of the few Japanese to excel in this sport.

Our Views: Clearly a strong athlete and competitor, Ms Kinoshita was known as an aggressive member of her sport and was still rising in the rankings. She will be missed. Her elder sister Sanae said that she lasted for 4 days on life support, but her heart eventually gave out, as the injuries from the fall were too severe to overcome. We will keep Ms Kinoshita in our thoughts.
