The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani took to Twitter to call the tragedy an “unforgivable mistake” and that the human error factor was involved. Russian made missiles were used as a team of Iranian military operatives shot the plane after taking off from an Iranian airport. The Boeing 737-800 airliner, Ukrainian International Airlines flight PS752 crashed 5 minutes after takeoff from Teharan`s Imam Khomeini airport on Wednesday 8 of January.
The Iranian government issued a statement of deep regret and said that the Revolutionary Guard would face punishment and that they were to issue a statement as well. Just as this passenger jet was taking off, the Iranian military fired a barrage of missiles at US bases in Iraq and Syria claiming that they had killed 80 US service men and women – later this was proved false as it was information directed at the local Iranian population. The US and Canadian governments, citing intelligence, issued statements saying that the plane was likely shot down by two surface-to-air missiles but Iranian officials denied these reports. Iran has since changed its story and has issued apologies from its highest levels of government.
