Riot police are now engaging the Hong Kong youth in the latest round of demonstrations that have paralyzed central Hong Kong as protesters smash and drive their way to the Legislative Council building, note that recently they took over the chamber. The series of violent confrontations with the police over the Bill that would have allowed extraditions to mainland China, if passed. This is a Bill that would, according to protesters, criminalize free speech and to many, who believe that they are not politically part of the mainland, crosses several red lines. Note that the Bill, has for now been suspended. Today, the protesters were in Western Kowloon.
Our Views: China is a power that has had some if not all control over many areas of the greater China world that spans several parts of Asia. These Hong Kong protests are clearly some push back from the local population that feels still distant from the mainland. However, we fell that over time, Hong Kong will be a part of the greater China sphere of influence and eventually be a somewhat different but peaceful extension of Beijing. For now, the y0uth must be respected for their views but their children might be sightly more open to the dictates of Beijing.
