From our office in Tokyo, we have reported on the Hong Kong Crisis via visits and interviews with locals. Last night we had dinner with some Chinese investors from the Mainland who provided a slightly different view on the protests. They stated that although they agreed with the youth who demand their rights in Hong Kong, they feel that the crisis will damage Hong Kong and its economy while having almost no impact on the Mainland.
From our conversations with those living in Hong Kong, ATM machines are burned, and it is difficult to shop or even take children to school in the morning. The government in Beijing is asking or even demanding that people do not move offices from Hong Kong as it will have a long-term negative impact on Hong Kong and its people.
