Ghosn`s Detention is Extended - Nissan and the Law

The Japanese press was full of articles about the arrest and detention of Mr Carlos Ghosn who was charged with understating salary which of course has tax implications. The former Nissan Motor Chairman, who was a media star, is now being detained to January 11, according to Jiji Press.

This story is interesting in that Mr Ghosn is detained and they his time is extended, again and again. So the story remains in the press, for months now.

The move allows Japanese prosecutors to continue questioning Mr Ghosn who now is under suspicion that he shifted losses that were private losses to the company. Mr Ghosn was allowed to meet lawyers on the first three days of the year, except on New Years Day, Japanese keep this as a day of rest. The defense side had planned to keep Mr Ghosn silent in questioning if they could not meet him during the New Year – the holidays were a pause in access.

Mr Ghosn was served the traditional Japanese New Year dinner of oseichi meals while he stayed in the Tokyo Detention House where he has been since November 19. This cuisine was served to all inmates in addition to their regular meals, according to the Justice Ministry of the detention house.

And the former representative director Greg Kelly who was also arrested was released on bail on Tuesday, before the holiday, is now in a hospital waiting for surgery. This story seems to never end as there are so many allegations as the investigation continues.
