President Trump declared that the G7 was “flawless” and the take away message from the Group of Seven summit in France was “unity.” During these meetings it has become clear that Trump tells everybody that they are all getting along great and of course he is papering over differences with leaders from Russia, Iran, China and other countries. “We got along great,” he said. After Trump disrupted several of these meetings with Trump-esque behavior, and specifically to scrap the annual practice of issuing a long joint statement that of course Trump does not seem to want to address. This communique is the summit conclusion and he seems to want to go at it alone.
He withdrew his signature from the 2018 communique after complaining he had been slighted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the host that year. Trump, in our view, sees the G7 and G20 as a political theater platform – he treats it as such. Think about the Macron want for climate control discussions. Well not only did Trump refuse to participate, but the news out of the press was not about Macron and climate change but the top story was Trump asked if he could use nuclear devices to change the patterns of hurricanes. His story took the top position despite being foolish and silly.
