The US Navy has a multipurpose fighter called the F/A-18 Super Hornet and it is an upgrade of a 25 year-old plane that can do it all. Reports from ABC News reported, attributed to Luis Martinez and Elizabeth McLaighlin, stated that one of these F/A-18s went down in the desert near Death Vally injuring 7 people on the ground. According to sources, two pilots were flying a pair of planes on a trining mission, but only one returned, Strike Fighter Wing Pacific commander Capt James Bates said in a press conference. The crash took place about 6 miles north of China Lake. Tim Cassell, owner of the Panamint Springs Resort nearby, said that he got his truck and drove to the crash site.
“I stopped my vehicle, got out and walked over to the edge and attempted to see if I could see any large pieces of the aircraft,” Casell said. There was nothing but burns on the grass with some trees and shrubs still on fire, but nothing larger than a dinner plate remained of the F/A-18. Those on the ground who were burned had light burns on their arms and legs.
