The Falcon 9 and its Dragon capsule have been in the news a lot as Elon Musk has built a series of successful launches. Mr Musk, a self-taught engineer who has successfully put together launches of four to five times each year, is the envy of many countries. Imagine a private company achieving what many countries with massive tax bases cannot put together. According to comments coming out of Mr Musk and his team, the ability to launch 8 to 10 times a year is not far away. Think about the amount of launch capabilities increasing 100 percent each year for the next 4 to 5 years. His cargo payloads will be flying to the International Space Station on a regular basis in the future.
When we study history, we see the US and the Soviet Union launching Apollo, Mercury, and Sputnik, with NASA, Boeing, and the combined industrial complex of firms and governments with 100,000 engineers fully focused. In the Soviet Union, the Russians worked closely with the Ukrainians to build rockets and engines. Currently, Mr Musk has a small group of kids in California and Texas in t-shirts designing rockets and launching them at a record pace.
Mr Musk is now talking about a trip to Mars, and changing the entire aerospace industry, in what he calls a new world of adventure. He wants to disrupt eht industry with smaller and smarter firms that can understand the technically difficult and capital intensive areas that was the world of the world`s richest governments until recently. He wants to be the Wright Brothers and the new Ford of space travel. It seems his fresh ideas and ability to build things that are much more efficient than government programs is his strengths. Clearly investors love him and he seems to continue to get the attention of the US, Chinese and Russian governments with his ability to change a massive industry.
