The $540 million dollars of theft as shocking in size. The agency said that the number of incidents totaled 158, three times the number in 2017, the previous year. Note that the first six months of 2018 saw excessive theft in the industry. Clearly this industry has been riff with organized crime and other organized groups that spend time searching for wallets and other areas to find coins.
According to the Asahi Shimbun, most of the theft took place in accounts owned by exchanges, while a small number, only about ¥2.5 billion or $22 million was in individual accounts.
