Chinese Spies, US Spies - Captured and Killed

While approaching a flight to Beijing, as he was boarding, US agents captured a former US Defense Intelligence Agency official with US classified information on his person. Apparently the US spy turned Chinese spy was Ron Rockwell Hansen, 58, a former DIA operative based in Beijing. This US national fell into financial trouble from 2013 to 2016 and then sold US secrets to China to pay the bills. He received over $800,000 for passing sensitive documents to his Chinese counterparts over a three year period.

Mr Hansen is a fluent Chinese and Russian speaker. Under investigation it was learned that the US agent met with Chinese intelligence agents, used phones they issued to him and even accessed US files that he was not approved to handle. They discovered he worked for the Chinese in 2016. Recent reports indicate that the Chinese offensive in espionage has been overwhelming – while the US government agencies try to manage the leaks.

Another US diplomat, Candace Marie Claiborne, was also arrested for taking money from Chinese agents but she was not directly found to have traded sensitive information for cash rewards. And in January 2018, former CIA agent Jerry Chun Shing Lee was arrested on charges that he sold information to China. The CIA`s extensive network of spies were taken down during the Obama Administration from 2010 to 2012 – as many as 20 spies were found out and some executed for cooperating with the US.

Executing spies in China and Russia is the norm for high treason.

In the case of Ron Rockwell Hansen, the agent was given 15 years in prison for his actions against the state. The US intelligence network has been struggling in China as its informant network was exposed by Jerry Lee, breaking down the entire communication network as it exposed so many US agents in key positions.
