Chinese attack aircraft were carrying out drills in the East China Sea in May when they carried out an “extremely dangerous military action” according to reports that have been kept secret until now. The report by Kyodo, suggested that this dangerous action was kept under close guard as the Japanese government is working to become closer to China to improve relations, hence the dangerous action was ignored or swept under the rug.
In addition it seems that the Japanese side thought that the drill was dangerous but to protect Japanese interests, and intelligence gathering methods, the incident was best kept quiet and not discussed. Separately, multiple radio-intercepting divisions of the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces all intercepted transmissions in which a Chinese aircraft was saying, “attack drills targeting MSDF vessels” This type of cat and mouse game has been carried out in the South China Sea, the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea with the US, Japan, China, Vietnam and South Korea all being involved now and then.
And with the US and Japan now carrying out exercises together there will be more taunts in the future from neighbors in the region. Russian planes have taunted Japanese and South Korean aircraft in the past month with one Korean fighter firing over 200 rounds in the direction of the Russian invader. More of this type of taunting will take placer in the future as these military powers jockey for position to face off China.
