China Shuts Down Thousands of Websites "Cleans Up Internet"

China has enacted an aggressive campaign to “clean up” the internet and challenge online information that might be harmful to society and the people. This three-month campaign has already closed down 4,000 websites and other outlets of online information according to the state-owned news agency, Xinhua News Agency, which cited an illegal publication watchdog.

More than 147,000 violations were found that include anti-social behavior, pornography, gambling and religious proselytizing …. some websites were spreading rumors, even suggesting that the government was not the free and open-minded entity that it is. According to sources, those spreading rumors will be subject to questioning after their websites are shut down and arrests are made. Some websites even had live-streaming pornography, that was actually hosted in Cambodia – it has 3.5 million registered users.

China is now using sweeping rules to control the anti-social ideas that are harmful to the people. This current crackdown comes are the UK and Germany are also clamping down on free speech on their domestic internet websites for hate speech and wrong speak.
