The Communist Party has built a vast surveillance state using a wide range of technologies and this system could be expanded with the catalyst being the new coronavirus. China has worked to identify its population and keep tabs on millions using facial recognition. The Hubei Province is ground zero for the virus and to date, over 2,500 people have died. China is now under pressure as Beijing is said to have pressured doctors to keep the lid on the spread of this infectious disease. In addition to keeping tabs on locals citizens, the government is now using drones to fly over streets and update the population on the virus, giving them directions and orders. Sounds like the future in a fiction movie, but it is 2020 China. The government in Beijing has now set up a system with WeChat and Alibaba that can give citizens instructions on – after calculating their travel miles – on how long to quarantine. People can be notified or even confirmed on recent movements. People are being asked to log on government systems and give the last digits in their passport to keep an eye on movement of millions of Chinese citizens. Some people are being quarantined for up to 14 days, the length of time that most who are infected, needs for incubation. China is behaving like the book, 1984.
