The Yomiuri Shimbun
Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki will hold exhibitions in Tokyo during the 2020 Olympics showing the destruction of these cities by atomic weapons during WWII. According to both city governments, the exhibition will educate foreign visitors on damage caused by the bombs – this is a campaign that the Japanese people are conducting to show their commitment to global peace. The timing of the games in 2020 will also have relevance as they cover the periods of August 6 and 9, the days these bombs were dropped on Japan.
We at Classiarius live in Japan and have visited these bomb locations in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were serious in the number of people who died on these two eventful days. However note that Japan suffered continued bombing in the war with over 50 cities coming under heavy bombing. Our point here is the bombing was nation-wide and not only in two cities.
The exhibitions will be held in the Games` venue, and will showcase materials damaged by the bombs, as well as photos of the sites and other displays. There will also be an event in which one can experience as they lived through the attacks and are survivors. They will share their stories and call for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Selection of the venue and other details will be offered in 2019.
