Project Titan is the autonomous vehicle group the exists within Apple – it just cut over 200 jobs. New leadership in Apple is putting together a new structure that warrants reducing some areas to focus on others. Some members of the team will be transferred to other technologies such as machine learning and other autonomous systems.
Back in August, Apple hired a Tesla engineering Vice President and Apple veteran, Doug Field, to work with Bob Mansfeld on these new systems. These 200 dismissals were seen as part of an anticipated restructuring under this new leadership. CEO Tim Cook has been talking in great detail initiatives on health as a key to the next 20 years in the firm – note that the world of cash rich citizens is expanding and rapidly getting older.
There were many who had high hopes for Apple autos as it laid off employees in this same group in 2016. Fully self-driving cars are still in the development stage as competitors such as Waymo, Cruise, and Tesla are active in this space. Also, there are investors dumping billions into Aurora, Zoox and Embark as well as others in this space. The potential does justify such amounts of cash investments, but the boom has not hit self-driving vehicles, at least not yet. Apple is making a smart business decision.
